Search Engine Marketing Tips
Getting Visitors
Why most online businesses fail
Online Marketing Tips
1.  The number of visitors your website receives has little impact on the purchasing patterns.
Purchasing traffic can be good or bad, many PPC websites bring in targeted traffic resulting in better sales. However if you purchase traffic from 95% of the companies claiming to improve your ranking and sales you may find yourself loosing money, it has become a growing trend to send fake traffic to websites your counter and statistics may show an increase but in reality it may very well be just an automaed program sending your sites hits.
2.  Any single method on its own will not guarantee success
To properly optimize your site you should remember these things:
a.) Build a site for humans not search engines.
b.) Use keyword phrases in your meta tags
c.) Use your keyword phrases throughout your content.
d.) Content is King - Use it often.
3.  Humans are creatures of habit and will return for another purchase if they had a good experience.
Be sure and add a "add to favorites" button this is proven to bring repeat traffic to sites
4.  "If you build it they will come" does not work on the internet
You have to optimize your site and submit it to search engines, be careful not to use FFA software as this can bring a very poor impact on your site.
5.  Search engine optimization software
Some of these Software's are scams, others will improve your ranking within 30 to 60 days but they can also hurt your sites ranking in the long scheme of things. Search engines are trying to find ways to detect automatic submissions and software optimizers so they can remove sites that employ these efforts.
6.  Connect with other websites
Give people a reason to visit another site. By doing this you will gain the users from another websites. This also builds a sense of trust.
7.  Word of mouth
yes this is still the best advertising method available. The way you treat your customers is important, they will talk about your site to colleges and friends.
8.  SPAM repulses visitors more than it attracts them.
Believe it or not you can over submit your site, this is called SPAMMING Search Engines. This can result in your site being Black Listed so be cautious when you submit you site(s) The tried and true rule is still "create your site for visitors not search engines".
9.  Mailing lists allow your visitors to stay in touch and to return to your site.
Opt in Email list can be very helpful, recent studies show that users will follow links from Newsletters 15% more than banner ads found on sites.
10. Banner & Text Exchange
As always remember your site is a business so only associate yourself with websites that you would feel comfortable recommending to others. When you exchange links with websites that have been blacklisted you will hurt your sites ranking more than help it.
11. Pop-ups, & Pop-unders - what is the truth?
Although browsers have tried to find ways to remove pop-up and pop-under ads you will still find sites that have managed to find loop holes in the scripting. Personally I do not enjoy receiving pop-ups. And whenever you advertise your site you should only use tactics that you would not mind if you were the customer. Banner Ads receive more less traffic but are much more direct to your targeted industry thus making banner ads more effective.
12. Doorway & Gateway Pages - Do they actually work?
Bulk Doorway pages are considered spam, this technology can be used in moderation as an effective tool to jump users but if you use this gateway method in bulk you will find your site blacklisted very quickly.
13. Metta Tags - Do search engines still use metta tags? If so how can I improve mine?
Metta Tags are still effective, Search Engines are currently working on software improvements that will eliminate the use of metta tags and instead index the entire sites content. But at this time you should use metta tags to describe actual phrases or topics discussed in that specific page.
14. Computerized fake traffic - am I paying for fake traffic or real visitors?
Fake Traffic is undetectable and can help improve your ranking but the best way to purchase traffic is with companies that have a good ranking on Alexa within the top 100,000 rating.
15. Posting Links in Guest-books, Message Boards, Blogs etc.
Search engines find this random bulk posting to be considered spam and they will remove your site from the index if you are caught but on the other hand whenever you leave a message in a forum, blog, or guestbook be certain that you leave your link. This allows for better rankings and is a more specific non-bulk effective tactic.
16. Adding my website to directories
Directories like Yellow Pages are one of the best ways to get your site listed among search engines and local business search results.
17. Submitting to Search Engines
I recommend that you hand submit your site every 45 days to search engines, try to avoid FFA sites and software automated submissions.
18. Treat a website as business because that's exactly what it is.
